Michael Crew is an avatar of The Vast.

Description

Michael is described by Herbert Knox as "short, barely over five feet, and very thin." (MAG 46) He has a scar in the shape of a Lichtenberg figure that arcs across his back and up his neck. (MAG 4) According to Jude Perry he is also pale and smells of ozone. (MAG 89)

He is also described as having “pale eyes” by Stephen Walker (MAG 75).

History

When Mike was 8, he was struck by lightning when playing in a field with Dominic Swain. The lightning branded him with the fractal pattern of a Lichtenberg figure and he was pursued throughout his life by a creature of The Spiral that took the shape of a strobing, branching figure that tormented him with the illusions of storms.

At age seventeen, he encountered the book A Journal of the Plague Year, which infected his house and killed his parents. He started looking for more books in the hope of finding one that would release him from his tormentor. (MAG 91)

In 1996, he found a book titled The Boneturner's Tale, from the library of Jurgen Leitner. He tried to use it to remove his scar but any changes he made were laced with fractals. He ultimately deposited it in Chiswick Library along with four other books. (MAG 46) Some time after encountering The Boneturner's Tale, he was briefly in possession of a book in Cyrillic that tried to "read him back." He buried it in the moors. (MAG 91)

From late 1997 to early 1998, Michael Crew frequents Lions Street Books, and eventually finds Ex Altiora. He binds the creature that is pursuing him to it and dedicates himself to The Vast, becoming an avatar. (MAG 46)

In 2005, he walks by Stephen and Grant Walker's house, watching their attempts to enter through a window via a ladder. In 2006 he encounters Stephen and Grant again, on top of the Tour Montparnasse, where Grant disappears along with Crew. (MAG 75)

In late 2012, the Jurgen Leitner-owned book Ex Altiora later showed Swain a Lichtenberg figure, setting him at ill at ease. (MAG 4)

In 2017, Jonathan Sims is given Crew's contact details by Jude Perry. (MAG 89) After Sims confronts him and takes his statement, Crew is knocked out by Alice Tonner who then kills and buries him. (MAG 91)
